The Maze

The Maze is a north side reef site in Turtle Harbour offering a labyrinth of spur-and-groove coral channels that divers navigate at shallow depths, making it one of Utila’s most distinctive beginner dives.

Overview

Located in Turtle Harbour on the north side of Utila, The Maze is defined by a series of maze-like channels cut through the reef by spur-and-groove formations. The channels begin at around 15 ft (4.5 m) and descend to 40 ft (12 m), with a deeper cave feature reported at around 70 ft (21 m) beyond the channel system. The shallowest section of the reef sits at approximately 15 ft (4.5 m), making this a well-lit, manageable dive for beginners while retaining enough structure to keep experienced divers engaged. The Maze is neighboured by Willy’s Hole, a cavern site at about 24 m. The channel system rewards methodical navigation and careful observation of the reef walls.

Marine Life

The maze channels and caves shelter a variety of Caribbean invertebrates and reef fish. Documented species at this site include southern stingrays encountered in the channels, scorpionfish (well-camouflaged against the reef — look carefully), lobster, green moray eels, queen triggerfish, nudibranchs, and seahorses. No source confirms lionfish specifically at this site; the deeper cave feature is noted for its structure rather than a particular species.

• Night dives in the Turtle Harbour area are recommended by local divers — The Maze’s channel structure is particularly interesting after dark.

Photography

An excellent macro site — nudibranchs on the channel walls, lobster in crevices, and seahorses in the surrounding coral. The shallow, well-lit channels provide good ambient light for natural-light photography in the morning.
