Overview

Conception Island is a protected national park (Conception Island National Park, established 1978, ~30,000 acres, managed by the Bahamas National Trust) in the central Bahamas — uninhabited, no development, no permanent population. Correction from the 2026-05-17 pass: the island is not liveaboard-exclusive. Stella Maris Resort on Long Island runs it as a day-boat excursion (roughly 13 miles/30 minutes by boat from the resort marina), in addition to being a stop for liveaboards such as the R/V Sea Dragon and vessels running Long Island–Conception–Rum Cay–San Salvador itineraries. Reported wall-top depths vary by source and by which mooring is used: Stella Maris cites a shallow leeside wall with tops around 14 m (45 ft); a personal dive log (geoffschultz.org) puts the top nearer 17–24 m (55–80 ft) at other moorings, dropping “into the abyss” — Exuma Sound reaches thousands of feet in this area, far beyond recreational range. Swim-throughs and tunnels on the south wall sit around 21–30 m (70–100 ft), consistent across sources. Visibility is consistently reported as excellent (30–60+ m / 100–200 ft). Water temperature ranges seasonally in the mid-to-high 20s°C.

Marine Life

Sources agree the site holds a strong shark presence: Caribbean reef sharks, nurse sharks, and lemon sharks are reported consistently, with occasional great hammerhead and tiger shark sightings also reported (iyc.com yacht-charter site). Spotted eagle rays and southern stingrays are reported in the surrounding waters. Green turtles nest on the island itself, and turtles are reported around the wall, though no source pinned a turtle sighting to the wall dive specifically as opposed to the island’s creek/nesting areas. Source conflict on reef-fish abundance: the current markdown previously described “large parrotfish, groupers, and snappers that are notably less skittish than at dived-out Nassau sites,” but a first-hand dive log (geoffschultz.org) explicitly notes the absence of large fish (over ~24 in/60 cm) at Conception, with the author guessing they have been fished out — this directly contradicts the “abundant large, tame fish” framing. That claim has been removed pending better sourcing; hard coral cover, sponges (elephant-ear and barrel), and gorgonian sea fans are well-corroborated across sources and retained.

Most divers target the 18–30 m zone where sponge and sea fan formations are richest; the tunnel/swim-through zone on the south wall runs 21–30 m. The deeper 30–43 m section drops toward water thousands of feet deep and is Advanced-diver territory requiring careful NDL and gas management — this is the basis for this site’s Advanced difficulty rating (per this repo’s own rubric: >30 m maximum depth = Advanced), independent of the access-method question below. Ascent along the wall face with a safety stop at the crest.

Conception Island itself is uninhabited with no facilities and no permanent population, but the wall is not liveaboard-exclusive: Stella Maris Resort on Long Island runs it as a day-boat excursion (~13 mi/30 min from the resort marina), and it is also a stop for liveaboards transiting the southern-central Bahamas (e.g., R/V Sea Dragon, and vessels on Long Island–Conception–Rum Cay–San Salvador routes per ScubaBoard trip reports). Entry by backward roll or giant stride from whichever boat is used. DSMB recommended for the open-water ascent.

Tips and Recommendations

One ScubaBoard poster described Conception Island trips as “more for advanced divers,” while Stella Maris’ own marketing describes the shallow wall top as “easy wall diving” — the likely resolution is that the wall crest itself is approachable, but the site’s Advanced rating here is driven by the site’s full depth range (30–43 m+ sections are dived) rather than the crest being technically demanding. Plan conservatively — with 40+ meter depth potential on the deeper sections, it is easy to overstay at depth. The shallower wall tops are among the more scenic hard coral sections reported in the southern-central Bahamas.

Safety Considerations

Whether reached by day boat or liveaboard, this is a remote site with no nearby emergency support — dive conservatively and maintain adequate gas reserves. The open wall position can develop current — monitor direction and intensity throughout the dive. DSMB recommended. No source consulted today confirmed specifics about night diving at this site; the previous mention of “night diving in the anchorage” has been removed as unverified.

Photography

Conception Wall’s clarity makes it a strong wide-angle photography site, with well-corroborated sponge and coral formations on the upper wall. The previous claim that fish here are “larger and less camera-shy than at heavily visited sites” has been removed — it is contradicted by a first-hand dive log reporting an absence of large fish, likely from historical fishing pressure (see Marine Life above).
