Overview
Current Cut is a narrow natural channel at the northern end of Eleuthera Island near Current Settlement village, where tidal water flows between the Atlantic Ocean and the Exuma Sound. When the tide runs, Current Cut generates some of the strongest recreational diving current in the Bahamas — divers are carried through the channel at 6–10 knots at peak flow, a figure repeated consistently across dive-shop, forum, and guide sources. The channel walls are covered with sea fans, sponges, and encrusting organisms that thrive in the nutrient-rich moving water, and the fish life in and around the channel is extraordinary. The maximum depth is generally reported as 16–18 meters (50–60 feet) by most sources, though one aggregator (zentacle.com) lists a shallower maximum of roughly 10 meters (32.8 feet) — treat depth as a range rather than a fixed number. Visibility is variable and current-dependent rather than uniformly excellent: several sources describe it as reduced by sediment stirred up during the drift (“the visibility isn’t great, since the rushing water stirs up the bottom” — eleuthera.me) and note incoming tide gives clearer water than outgoing; reported figures range from roughly 15–25 meters on a good incoming tide.

Marine Life
Current Cut is one of the best sites in the Bahamas for fish volume — the constant food delivery from the moving water supports enormous populations. Schools of horse-eye jacks pack the channel in dense, swirling formations. Caribbean reef sharks are documented in the cut (diveoneclub.com), and blacktip sharks have been specifically observed there (three counted on one pass, per discover-eleuthera-bahamas.com) — one source additionally mentions “mako sharks,” but this is not corroborated elsewhere and is biologically atypical for a shallow tidal channel, so it is treated here as unverified rather than repeated. Spotted eagle rays (seven counted on one pass) and a resident pod of stingrays are regularly seen riding the current through the channel. The walls carry sea fans, sponges, and hardy coral growth adapted to constant flow. Barracuda, green moray eels, lobster, and yellowtail snapper have also been reported sheltering in the channel’s rock holes and eddies. Queen angelfish and parrotfish are noted as well. Dive Profile
The classic Current Cut dive times entry with the incoming tide, entering the channel at the Atlantic end and exiting into the Exuma Sound. The chase boat follows from the Atlantic and motors around to the Sound side for pickup. The entire channel transit takes 10–20 minutes depending on tidal speed. Divers are simply carried through — depth is controlled by positioning on the channel wall, and the main skill is staying close to the wall without hitting it.

This is one of the few places in the Bahamas where drift diving experience is genuinely required.
Safety Considerations
This is an advanced drift dive with real hazards from the current force and potential for separation from the group. Never attempt this site without an experienced local operator who knows the tidal cycle. Carry a DSMB and deploy it in clear water as you exit the channel. The current can create turbulence at the channel exit — be prepared for an energetic surface pickup. Dive only on conditions and tide timing specified by the operator.

Current Cut is exhilarating and challenging to photograph simultaneously — the drift speed makes close-up work difficult. Wide-angle to fisheye is the appropriate choice: capture the channel walls rushing past, the fish schools in the main flow, and (if timing allows) the wall sea fan formations from close range.
