Thunderball Grotto

A small, spectacular sea cave on Staniel Cay in the Exumas — made famous by two James Bond films and offering one of the Caribbean’s most photogenic snorkelling and diving experiences.

Overview

Thunderball Grotto is a limestone sea cave on a small rocky island near Staniel Cay in the Exuma Cays, made internationally famous as a filming location for the 1965 James Bond film Thunderball and the 1983 film Never Say Never Again. The cave has multiple underwater entrances that lead to a large internal chamber with openings in the roof that allow shafts of natural light to penetrate to the water below, creating spectacular light effects. The cave’s maximum depth is just 8 meters — the interior is shallow enough for snorkelling. The crystal-clear Exuma water delivers extraordinary visibility of 25–35+ meters. The site is visited year-round by yachts, water taxis, and dive boats from Staniel Cay. Water temperature is 24–28°C.

Marine Life

The cave interior supports a dense community of tropical fish that have become highly habituated to visitors. Large schools of yellowtail snapper, sergeant majors, and chromis fill the interior chamber — the fish are comfortable approaching to arm’s length. Outside the cave, the reef and rock surfaces carry hard coral formations, sea fans, and encrusting organisms. Nurse sharks occasionally rest on the cave floor. The clear Exuma water means every fish is vividly visible from surface snorkelling level.

Dive Profile

Entry through one of the underwater cave entrances (typically the largest on the south side) at 2–4 meters depth. Swim through to the interior chamber and surface inside the cave. Explore the lit interior chamber from the surface or while hovering at various depths. Exit through any of the entrances. The cave is small enough that a complete exploration requires 20–30 minutes. Tidal current flows through the entrances — check direction before entering.

Entry and Exit

Boat access from Staniel Cay water taxi or dive operator. Entry through the underwater cave opening at 2–4 meters — this requires submerging (either snorkel or scuba) and swimming approximately 4 metres horizontally to the chamber interior. Not suitable for non-swimmers. Exit through the same or alternative entrances.

Tips and Recommendations

Visit at low or slack tide to minimise current through the entrances. The most dramatic light effects occur when the sun is directly overhead (10am–2pm) and shafts of light enter through the roof openings. Low tide or slack water also reduces the current through the entrances. Staniel Cay Yacht Club rents kayaks and provides water taxi service to the cave for independent visitors.

Safety Considerations

The cave entrance requires brief underwater swimming (snorkel or scuba) — guests who are not comfortable submerging cannot enter. Tidal current through the entrances can be significant — do not attempt entry against a strong outflowing current. The cave interior is safe and has ample headroom, but avoid the narrow passages that extend beyond the main chamber. The site is a natural cave, not a dive-managed site — there is no divemaster oversight.

Photography

Thunderball Grotto is one of the Caribbean’s most photographed underwater locations. The dramatic light shafts entering through the roof openings create the signature image — a fisheye lens captures the full chamber with multiple light beams and fish clouds simultaneously. Shooting upward toward the openings during midday light is the classic composition. The fish are habituated enough to swim directly around the camera.
