House Reef
This house reef in North Male Atoll is a shallow fringing reef accessible directly from a resort or dive centre, offering beginner-friendly conditions with abundant reef life in warm, calm water.
Overview
House reefs in the Maldives are the fringing reefs that surround resort islands, and this site exemplifies what makes them so popular — easy access, calm conditions, and a surprising density of marine life in modest depths. The reef crest sits at just 2–3 metres, dropping gently to around 12 metres before transitioning to a sandy lagoon floor. Despite the limited depth, the coral coverage is rich, with plate corals, brain corals, and branching formations providing habitat for a dazzling variety of reef fish: parrotfish, triggerfish, angelfish, and schools of blue-lined snapper are all common. Hawksbill turtles are regular visitors, often seen resting on the reef or grazing on sponge colonies. At night the house reef transforms — octopus, moray eels, and sleeping parrotfish in their mucus cocoons are highlights of night dives. Visibility typically reaches 10–20 metres in the calm lagoon. Water temperature is 28–30°C in the shallows.

Tips for Divers
Perfect for first dives, refresher dives, and night diving. The shallow depth allows extended bottom times — ideal for slow, observational diving. At night, bring a torch and take your time on the sand patches beside the reef for critter encounters.
