Housereef East
Housereef East is the eastern face of a resort fringing reef in North Male Atoll, a sheltered and shallow dive site ideal for beginners, snorkellers, and those seeking an easy daytime or night reef experience.
Overview
The eastern exposure of this house reef benefits from the morning sun, which illuminates the coral garden in its best light and warms the shallows during early dives. The reef runs as a gentle slope from the surface to around 12 metres, with a broad, coral-encrusted crest at 3–5 metres that transitions to a gradually descending reef face. Hard coral coverage here is well-developed given the sheltered, low-current setting — plate corals and star corals form the backbone of the structure, and branching formations in the shallows are home to damselfish and chromis in their thousands. Larger residents include resident groups of bluestripe snapper, triggerfish, and the occasional hawksbill turtle moving slowly across the reef. The sandy patches beside the reef base are productive for flounders, garden eels, and buried stingrays. Visibility averages 10–20 metres. Water temperature is 28–30°C.

Tips for Divers
Best dived in the morning when the eastern sun angle provides the clearest light for photography. The sandy bottom beside the reef base is worth investigating slowly — small critters often go unnoticed by divers who stay solely on the reef structure.
