Housereef West
Housereef West is the western face of a resort fringing reef in North Male Atoll, a calm and shallow site that catches the late afternoon light and offers excellent conditions for sunset dives and twilight critter encounters.
Overview
Positioned on the western flank of the island, Housereef West is sheltered from the prevailing northeast winds during the dry season, resulting in glass-calm surface conditions that make it a favourite for evening and night dives. The reef descends gently from the surface to about 12 metres, with the coral crest at 3–4 metres providing dense, healthy hard coral formations including table corals, brain corals, and Porites heads. The mid-afternoon and evening timing brings soft light through the water, enhancing the colours of the orange anthias and purple sea fans on the reef face. Triggerfish and parrotfish are abundant along the western wall throughout the day, and at dusk the reef transitions to night-life: octopus, squid, and small reef squid begin their activity, while sleeping parrotfish are visible in mucus cocoons on the coral. Visibility averages 10–20 metres. Water temperature is 28–30°C.

Tips for Divers
Particularly recommended for evening and night dives when the site comes alive with octopus and squid activity. Bring a torch and move slowly along the reef base — night-time critters are easily startled and will retreat if approached too quickly.
