Rasdhoo Madivaru Corner
Rasdhoo Madivaru Corner is one of the most celebrated dive sites in Rasdhoo Atoll, sitting at the southwestern tip of Madivaru island where strong Indian Ocean currents converge to create upwellings rich in nutrients. The site is world-famous for hammerhead shark sightings in the early morning, a phenomenon that draws divers from across the globe.
Site Conditions
- Depth range: 15–30 m
- Typical visibility: 20–35 m
- Currents: Strong oceanic currents; experienced divers preferred
- Best season: December–March for hammerhead encounters
What to Expect
The corner itself is a steep reef wall that drops from the surface to depths well beyond recreational limits. At first light, hammerhead sharks aggregate in the blue water off the corner wall, often in groups of 5–20 individuals. Divers position themselves below the thermocline at 25–30 metres, facing the open ocean, and wait for the sharks to circle in from the deep. Grey reef sharks patrol the wall throughout the day. The reef itself is densely colonised with sea fans, black coral trees, and overhangs sheltering large Napoleon wrasse, moray eels, and resting white-tip reef sharks. Eagle rays glide along the wall with impressive regularity.
Tips for Divers
This site demands an early start — hammerhead sightings are almost exclusively at dawn before the animals disperse into deeper water. A wetsuit of at least 3 mm is advisable; the thermocline can drop temperatures significantly. Strong current control and confident blue-water hovering skills are essential. Night or evening dives reveal a completely different reef character, with sleeping turtles and active hunting behaviour from moray eels.
