Velidhu Hausriff

Velidhu Hausriff (“Velidhu House Reef”) is the fringing reef directly accessible from Velidhu Island Resort in North Ari Atoll. As a house reef, it serves as the primary training and recreational dive site for resort guests, offering accessible diving from the beach or jetty without needing a boat. The shallow profile and calm conditions make it an excellent introduction to Maldivian reef diving.

Site Conditions

  • Depth range: 1–12 m
  • Typical visibility: 10–20 m
  • Currents: Very mild; protected lagoon location
  • Best season: Year-round; most productive for marine life during November–April

What to Expect

The house reef wraps around the island’s shoreline, offering a variety of terrain from sandy shallows to small coral bommies and modest reef walls reaching 10–12 metres. The reef hosts a thriving resident community of species habituated to regular diver presence — Napoleon wrasse, nurse sharks, and hawksbill turtles that can be approached closely. Parrotfish, triggerfish, and pufferfish are abundant throughout the reef. The sandy bottom between reef structures is productive for macro photography, with nudibranchs, flatworms, and various gobies and shrimp visible on most dives. Night dives from the house reef reveal octopus on hunting forays, resting parrotfish in their mucus cocoons, and large crabs active on the sand.

Tips for Divers

Shore entry from the resort beach or jetty makes this a flexible, easy-access dive at any time of day. The shallow profile and mild conditions are ideal for newly certified divers completing their first open-water dives post-certification. Night diving is particularly rewarding and is easily arranged through the resort dive centre. The house reef also provides a good snorkelling experience for non-divers in the resort’s shallow lagoon zone.
