Bogtong Bato is a submerged pinnacle off the northwest coast of Malapascua Island, one of several pinnacle dive sites in the Malapascua area that offer alternatives to the famous Monad Shoal thresher shark dives.

Overview

The name “Bogtong Bato” translates roughly as “single rock” in Cebuano, accurately describing the isolated pinnacle structure that rises from the seafloor to within a few meters of the surface. The pinnacle sits in the waters between Malapascua Island and the Cebuano mainland, forming a compact structure that concentrates marine life in the same way the region’s more celebrated dive sites do. Hard and soft corals encrust the pinnacle sides, and the structure’s isolated position in open water attracts a mix of reef residents and pelagic visitors. Currents sweeping past the pinnacle bring nutrients that sustain the dense sea fan growth on the deeper sections.

Site Information

  • Location: Northwest of Malapascua Island, Philippines
  • Entry Type: Boat dive
  • Site Type: Pinnacle/seamount
  • Difficulty Level: Intermediate
  • Maximum Depth: 30 meters
  • Typical Visibility: 10-25 meters
  • Current: Variable; can strengthen around the pinnacle
  • Best Time: March to June (generally calmer conditions)

Marine Life

The pinnacle’s concentrated structure supports a range of resident and visiting species. Sea fans on the deeper sections harbour longnose hawkfish and filefish. Lionfish are common on the mid-depth sections. Sea snakes may be encountered cruising the reef face. The open-water environment around the pinnacle attracts trevally, barracuda, and occasional reef sharks. Macro subjects including nudibranchs and flatworms inhabit the coral growth throughout the structure.

Dive Profile

Descend to the base of the pinnacle at 25–30 meters and ascend in a spiral around the structure, covering all sides as you work your way shallower. The pinnacle top at 3–5 meters is an excellent location for the safety stop while continuing to observe reef life. Manage air carefully — 30 meter starting depth limits bottom time.

Entry and Exit

Accessible by banca from Malapascua dive resorts. The short boat ride makes this viable as a second or third dive of the day. Entry by giant stride; return to the banca by ladder. Deploy SMB before ascending for boat crew visibility.

Tips and Recommendations

  • Dive this site as a complement to a morning Monad Shoal trip
  • The pinnacle rewards slow, circular diving — cover all sides of the structure
  • Sea fans on the 20–30 meter sections deserve close inspection for hiding critters
  • Bring a torch for exploring the darker crevices lower on the pinnacle
  • The site is excellent for both experienced divers and confident intermediates

Safety Considerations

The 30 meter maximum depth requires careful no-decompression limit management. Currents can increase around the pinnacle unexpectedly. Deploy SMB for the ascent. Hyperbaric facilities are limited in the Malapascua area — conservative diving is important.

Photography

Pinnacle photography lends itself to dramatic wide-angle shots of the structure receding into the deep. Sea fan details on the deeper sections and the abundant reef life on the mid-depth sections both provide excellent subjects. Natural light is good on the shallower pinnacle sections.
