Cave Lagoon is a cave and lagoon dive site in Raja Ampat, West Papua, Indonesia. The site combines the dramatic geology of Raja Ampat’s karst limestone coastline — honeycombed with caverns, overhangs, and hidden chambers — with the calm, biologically rich water of a sheltered lagoon. The combination of cave exploration and lagoon reef diving makes it one of the more unusual sites in the archipelago.

Overview

The cave section involves passing through a limestone cavern or swim-through that opens into the sheltered lagoon beyond. The cave entrance is lit by natural light filtering through the water and through cracks in the limestone ceiling, creating ethereal light-shaft effects that are particularly photogenic. Cave walls support encrusting growth: hydroids, tunicates, and crinoids colonise the shaded surfaces where coral cannot grow.

Inside the lagoon, the sheltered conditions encourage a different community than exposed ocean reefs. Soft corals in brilliant purples and oranges drape the lagoon walls, and the calm, clear water allows excellent visibility. Juvenile fish are abundant — the lagoon functions as a nursery habitat — and resident populations of turtles and resting whitetip reef sharks take advantage of the protected environment.

The Advanced rating reflects the cave passage, which requires divers to remain calm in confined spaces and maintain good buoyancy to avoid disturbing sediment or organisms on the cave walls. Water temperature stays around 27–29°C. Visibility is excellent once inside the lagoon.
