Deep Rock

Deep Rock is a deep pinnacle dive site in the Gam Island area of Raja Ampat, West Papua, Indonesia.

Overview

Deep Rock is the deepest-character site in the Gam area cluster, a pinnacle formation that drops from the recreational zone into the mesopelagic, surrounded by open blue water. Pinnacles in Raja Ampat are aggregation points for large pelagic species — the submerged rock concentrates baitfish, which in turn attract the ocean’s apex predators. Deep Rock occupies a position in slightly more open water than its Gam area neighbours, and this exposure brings regular visits from sharks, trevally, and occasional larger species. The pinnacle surface is covered in sea fans and encrusting invertebrates at depth, with more open coral growth near the top. Advanced rating reflects the current exposure and the deep nature of the structure. Visibility can reach 25-35 meters in good conditions. Water temperatures average 27-29°C.

Marine Life

Deep Rock attracts the large pelagic species that make Raja Ampat pinnacle dives memorable: schools of trevally orbit the rock in tight formations, while grey and whitetip reef sharks cruise its flanks. Napoleon wrasse are resident at the upper pinnacle. The rock face supports impressive sea fan development at depth, with associated pygmy seahorses and commensal invertebrates. Barracuda often school above the pinnacle top. Rainbow runners and large groupers complete the picture. The open-water exposure occasionally delivers sightings of hammerhead sharks, eagle rays, and — during season — whale sharks.

Dive Profile

Descent should be quick and direct to the pinnacle to avoid being swept away from the structure by current. Orient yourself on the pinnacle, assess current direction, and position on the upcurrent side for the best fish observation. Spend the main part of the dive at the upper pinnacle (10-25 meters). The pinnacle extends below safe recreational limits — do not chase depth. Ascend via the pinnacle when possible; if drift forces a free-water ascent, deploy SMB immediately and ascend at a controlled rate.

Entry and Exit

Access is by dive boat. Your guide will drop divers in a specific position relative to the current. Descent must be prompt. The boat follows divers’ bubbles and SMB throughout. Brief the boat captain on the drift direction and likely exit position. Always carry a reef hook for current management.

• A reef hook is essential equipment for comfortable observation at the pinnacle
• Stay alert for large pelagics approaching from the blue water — keep peripheral awareness
• The upper pinnacle is richest for both coral life and fish; resist descending too deep

Safety Considerations

Deep Rock deserves its Advanced rating. Strong, variable currents around the pinnacle can separate divers from the structure without warning. Never dive this site without a reef hook and SMB. Depth management is critical — the pinnacle drops well below recreational limits. Always carry appropriate signaling devices and follow your guide’s instructions on current management. Do not ascend without an SMB deployed in free-water conditions.

Photography

Deep Rock rewards wide-angle shooting for its pelagic subjects. Position on the upcurrent face of the pinnacle and shoot into the blue water where fish aggregate. Schools of trevally photographed from below against the blue provide dramatic images. The sea fans at depth offer macro opportunities if conditions permit a stationary position. The open-water visibility at this site often allows captures of multiple large species in a single frame.
