Harto's Reef

Harto’s Reef is a local favourite in Raja Ampat, West Papua, Indonesia, named after a Papuan dive guide who discovered and championed the site. Sites bearing the names of local guides represent a living tradition in Raja Ampat’s diving community, acknowledging the Indigenous knowledge and expertise that underpins the region’s dive tourism.

Overview

Harto’s Reef is a well-rounded coral reef offering excellent diversity across a relatively compact area. The reef crest supports healthy hard coral cover — staghorn, plate, and massive Porites — while the slope below transitions through sea fans and soft coral gardens. Cleaning stations dot the reef at multiple depths, drawing a steady stream of reef fish for servicing by wrasse and cleaner shrimp.

The reef has a reputation for reliably good fish life: schooling fusiliers above the crest, large grouper lurking in the deeper crevices, and hawksbill turtles resting on broad coral heads. The site is particularly productive for macro photography in the rubble zones at depth, where nudibranchs, flatworms, and hairy frogfish are occasionally spotted. Guides who know the site well can direct attention to its most productive corners.

Visibility runs 15–25 metres. Water temperature averages 27–29°C. Currents are generally mild, making the site accessible and relaxing.
