Kakatua Reef — named for the Indonesian word for cockatoo (“kakatua”), reflecting the brightly colored parrotfish that are conspicuous residents — is a reef dive in northern Raja Ampat offering good coral coverage and a productive reef fish community.
Overview
Located in the northern reaches of Raja Ampat near Waigeo Island, Kakatua Reef is a healthy coral reef ecosystem reflecting the region’s status as the global center of marine biodiversity. The reef is characterized by excellent hard coral coverage on the upper sections and a more varied mix of soft coral and encrusting organisms at depth. Large parrotfish — the site’s namesake — are among the most visible reef inhabitants, their powerful beaks grinding coral and their vibrant blue-green plumage vivid against the coral backdrop. Water temperature averages 27–29°C with visibility of 12–20 meters.

Marine Life
Parrotfish are the defining species — steephead parrotfish, bullethead parrotfish, and the spectacular bumphead parrotfish (Bolbometopon muricatum) are all documented in the area. Bumphead parrotfish sometimes appear in school formations early in the morning, creating a memorable spectacle as their combined feeding creates a crackling sound of bitten coral. Beyond the parrotfish, the reef supports napoleon wrasse, hawksbill turtles, various surgeonfish schools, and the typical diverse butterflyfish and wrasse community of a healthy Indo-Pacific reef. Macro subjects include nudibranchs and flatworms on rubble sections.
Dive Profile
Standard sloping reef from crest to 20–25 meters. Morning dives maximize the chance of encountering bumphead parrotfish, which tend to leave the reef as the day progresses. Work the reef systematically, checking crevices and sandy pockets as well as the open coral. The upper 12 meters is particularly productive for reef fish observation.
Entry and Exit
Boat access from northern Raja Ampat operators or liveaboards. Entry via giant stride or back roll. Deploy SMB on ascent; the northern area has some boat traffic from village vessels.
Tips and Recommendations
- Arrive early in the morning for the best chance of encountering bumphead parrotfish schools
- The crackling sound of parrotfish biting coral is distinctive — listen for it to locate the school
- Do not approach bumpheads from the front or try to intercept their path; observe from the side
- Kakatua Reef pairs well with The Cathedral and other northern Raja Ampat sites on liveaboard itineraries

Bumphead parrotfish are spectacular photographic subjects. Wide-angle glass is essential — a school of bumpheads in formation is a dramatic, large-scale subject requiring significant working distance. Individual parrotfish portraits at closer range showcase their extraordinary coloration. Standard reef fish and coral wide-angle photography rounds out the session.
