Overview
Lao lao is a submerged pinnacle in the Kofiau-Misool area of Raja Ampat’s vast island network, offering the kind of vertically structured diving that characterizes the archipelago’s best sites. Pinnacles in Raja Ampat act as current-swept aggregation points, concentrating fish life at densities that can overwhelm even experienced divers. The structure rises from deeper water, with the summit sitting within recreational depth range, allowing divers to explore the full relief of the formation. Encrusting hard corals, sponges, and sea fans cover the rock face, while the water column above the pinnacle top frequently hosts schooling fish attracting larger predators. Visibility reaches 20-35 meters in good conditions, and water temperatures average 27-29°C.

Marine Life
Schools of trevally and barracuda orbit the pinnacle in tight formations. Reef sharks — predominantly whitetip and grey reef — cruise close to the structure. Rainbow runners and fusiliers populate the water column above the summit. On the pinnacle itself, look for large groupers in crevices, Napoleon wrasse patrolling the flanks, and lionfish posed in overhangs. Current-swept sections of the pinnacle are draped in colourful sea fans and black coral, home to various shrimp and crab species.
Dive Profile
Descend quickly to the pinnacle top and orient yourself relative to the current. Spend the main portion of the dive working around the upper pinnacle between 10-25 meters, using the structure as shelter from the current on the lee side. The pinnacle summit is the best area for fish aggregations. Ascend up the structure at the end of the dive, completing the safety stop in the blue water above the top while watching for schooling fish below. Be prepared to make a free-water ascent if current pulls you off the structure.
Entry and Exit
Access is by dive boat. Your guide will position the entry relative to the current direction. Descent should be direct and quick to avoid drifting. Carry an SMB for ascent — boat pickup may be some distance from the pinnacle if you drift during the safety stop.

- Stay alert for strong and variable currents around the pinnacle
- Maintain good buoyancy — the pinnacle drops steeply and depth can increase rapidly
- Position yourself on the upcurrent side of the structure to watch fish activity

This site is rated Advanced due to the potential for strong, unpredictable currents typical of Raja Ampat pinnacles. Always carry a reef hook for current management. An SMB is mandatory. Be prepared for upwellings that can affect buoyancy. Never descend below your certification limit — the pinnacle drops deeper than recreational limits below the summit.

Pinnacles offer spectacular wide-angle opportunities — position yourself on the upcurrent face with the pinnacle behind you to capture fish schools in the water column. The structure itself provides foreground interest for wide reef scenes. Macro photographers should check the sea fans for pygmy seahorses and other commensals on the encrusting growth of the lower pinnacle sections.
