Overview
One of the more unusual dive experiences in Raja Ampat, this site combines a healthy coral reef with direct access to mangrove root systems — offering an ecological transition zone rarely encountered underwater. The shallow depths make it ideal for extended bottom times spent exploring the intricate root structures, where juvenile fish shelter in extraordinary numbers. The mangrove-adjacent reef hosts a different community than open-water sites: expect heavy soft coral growth, sponge encrustation along the roots, and dense schools of small reef fish. Visibility is typically more limited than offshore sites, but the biodiversity packed into the shallows compensates thoroughly. Water temperatures average 27-29°C year-round.

Marine Life
The mangrove root zone teems with juvenile batfish, sweetlips, and snappers using the roots as nursery habitat. Clownfish nest in anemones anchored to the reef beside the mangroves. Look for banded sea kraits and various nudibranch species on the root surfaces. Hawksbill turtles regularly forage in the shallows. The reef edge supports small reef sharks, blue-spotted stingrays, and the occasional Napoleon wrasse. Pygmy seahorses have been reported clinging to gorgonians near the mangrove margin.
Dive Profile
This is predominantly a shallow dive, with most of the interesting habitat sitting between 3-15 meters depth. Begin at the reef edge and work toward the mangrove roots, spending time in the 5-10 meter zone where root structures meet soft coral. The site rewards slow, careful exploration rather than covering distance. A second pass at different depths often reveals new species. Shallow safety stops are easy and productive.
Entry and Exit
Access is by boat from Sorong or local homestay operators. Entry via giant stride into calm water near the mangrove margin. Exit onto the dive boat or nearby shore depending on the operator. Tidal timing matters — dive at higher water to access the mangrove zone fully.

Safety Considerations
Tidal currents can flow through the mangrove zone at certain states — check timing with your guide. Be careful around mangrove roots and avoid contact. Jellyfish can be present depending on season. Carry a surface marker buoy (SMB) and alert the boat to your position on ascent.

The mangrove root systems create extraordinary framing opportunities — silhouettes of roots against ambient light filtering down from the surface make compelling wide-angle shots. The shallow depth allows natural light macro work without strobe as primary source. Juvenile fish clustering around root bases make excellent subjects. Bring both a wide-angle and macro lens setup if possible.
