Mioskun is an exposed pinnacle in the eastern Dampier Strait, closely related to the nearby Myoskon site and sharing its reputation for strong current action and impressive pelagic encounters — most notably a resident population of grey reef sharks that school above the pinnacle summit in numbers rarely seen elsewhere in Raja Ampat.
Overview
The Mioskun pinnacle rises from deeper water in the eastern Dampier Strait and is regularly swept by significant tidal flows. This current exposure is exactly what makes Mioskun special: the grey reef sharks (Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos) that school above the pinnacle during active tidal flow gather here in groups of 15–30 individuals, circling the structure in a way that strikes every visiting diver as extraordinary. Alongside the sharks, dense schools of fusiliers and jacks characterize the water column above the structure. The pinnacle sides carry soft coral and encrusting growth typical of current-washed seamount habitat in this region. Water temperature averages 27–29°C and visibility is typically 15–25 meters.

Marine Life
Grey reef sharks are the defining encounter at Mioskun. On dives with good tidal flow, 15–30 grey reef sharks circle above and around the pinnacle summit in a loose, spiraling formation — an extraordinary spectacle that distinguishes Mioskun from most other sites in the region. White-tip reef sharks are also present, often resting on ledges. Mixed schools of fusiliers and trevally circle in the upper water column. The pinnacle’s flanks host wobbegong sharks and varied reef fish. Occasional manta ray sightings have been reported by liveaboard guests.
Dive Profile
Descend rapidly to the pinnacle summit (8–12 meters) to observe the shark activity before approaching closer. Grey reef sharks can be skittish in heavy diver traffic — move slowly and avoid sudden gestures. Use a reef hook if available to hold position in the current without finning. From the summit, work around the pinnacle flanks to 20–25 meters, checking ledges for wobbegongs and resting white-tips before ascending back to the shark zone for the final portion of the dive.
Entry and Exit
Boat access only — liveaboards or eastern Dampier Strait operators. Strong current on entry requires a rapid descent to the pinnacle to avoid being swept past. Coordinate closely with the boat crew for entry timing and SMB pickup. Never surface without an SMB in strong current.
Tips and Recommendations
- Advanced divers only — this site requires current management skill and experience with sharks
- Move slowly and avoid fast movements near the grey reef sharks to prevent spooking the school
- A reef hook is highly recommended for holding position in the current while watching the sharks
- The shark school is most impressive during active tidal flow — timing is critical
- Do not position yourself between the sharks and the open water on the outer edge of the pinnacle
Safety Considerations
Grey reef sharks can display threat posturing (arched back, lowered pectoral fins) if they feel cornered or threatened. Give sharks plenty of space and never approach directly. In strong current, divers can be swept off the pinnacle into open water — this is the primary safety concern. Carry an SMB, whistle, and signaling mirror. Only experienced current-competent divers should attempt this site.
Photography
Mioskun’s grey reef shark schooling is one of Raja Ampat’s most spectacular wide-angle photographic subjects. A 14–17mm full-frame equivalent lens allows a diver to frame multiple sharks with the open blue water behind them. Shooting upward from the pinnacle top to capture sharks against the light is particularly effective. The density of the school varies throughout the dive — patience at the summit zone maximizes photographic opportunities.
