My Reef

My Reef is a personal favourite among dive guides and visiting divers in the Keruo area of Raja Ampat, West Papua, Indonesia. The affectionate name suggests a site that rewards return visits — a reef with character and consistent animal life that makes divers want to claim it as their own.

Overview

My Reef is a coral reef with strong hard coral coverage across its upper sections and a productive slope descending to a sandy bottom at depth. The reef is known for predictable animal encounters: turtles are almost always present, resting on flat coral or grazing sponges; reef sharks circle the deeper edges; and dense schools of fusiliers hover above the crest throughout the dive.

The reef structure provides ample nooks and overhangs to investigate. Moray eels peer from crevices, and lionfish pose motionlessly under ledges. The rubble zones at the base of coral heads reward slow searching — nudibranchs, flatworms, and small crabs are regular finds. In calmer conditions the site is excellent for underwater photography, with cooperative turtles often allowing close approach.

Visibility typically reaches 15–25 metres. Water temperature stays at 27–29°C. Currents are generally mild, making the dive comfortable and unhurried.

Dive Profile

The dive explores the reef crest and slope between 8 and 25 metres, with time for both wide-angle fish photography and macro searching in the shallows. The gentle conditions suit intermediate divers and underwater photographers. Entry and exit are by boat.
