Myoskon is a submerged pinnacle in the eastern Dampier Strait, rising from the depths to deliver a classic Raja Ampat pelagic experience — schooling fish in vast numbers, open-water pelagics sweeping through, and the perpetual energy of a current-washed oceanic structure.
Overview
The Myoskon pinnacle is located in a current-prone passage east of the main liveaboard corridors, which means it sees less traffic and often delivers more undisturbed wildlife encounters than the marquee sites. The structure rises steeply to within a few meters of the surface, and its position in the tidal flow concentrates plankton and the food chain that follows. Schools of fusilier and snapper encircle the pinnacle summit in dense formations. Occasional oceanic visitors — tuna, manta rays, and sharks — appear on the outer edges when currents are running. Visibility typically ranges from 15–25 meters and water temperature averages 27–29°C.

Marine Life
Schooling fish dominate the upper zone of the pinnacle: yellowback fusiliers, blue-and-gold fusiliers, and mixed snapper schools create swirling formations above the summit. Grey reef sharks and white-tip reef sharks patrol the deeper flanks. Pelagic species including tuna, Spanish mackerel, and occasional manta rays appear when currents are running. The pinnacle’s sides are encrusted with soft coral, and sponge gardens at 20–27 meters support nudibranchs, flatworms, and various crustaceans for those who look carefully.
Dive Profile
Approach the pinnacle from its upcurrent side and descend directly to the summit. Hold position at the top (8–12 meters) to observe the schooling fish and any pelagic visitors before working around the structure. Descend the flanks in a circular route to 20–27 meters to see the sponge and soft coral communities. Return to the summit zone for the final portion of the dive, enjoying the fish action before ascending slowly. Deploy SMB at 5 meters.
Entry and Exit
Boat access only — primarily liveaboards or operators running eastern Dampier Strait routes. Current assessment before entry is essential. Entry via back roll into the current, with rapid descent to avoid being swept away from the pinnacle. SMB deployment on ascent is mandatory; boat pickup via SMB line.
Tips and Recommendations
- This is an advanced site requiring good current management — hook competence recommended
- The best fish action is on a moderate incoming current; excessive current makes the dive unpleasant
- Descend quickly and get below the current shadow of the pinnacle before exploring
- Look out into the blue as well as at the reef — pelagics often appear unexpectedly
- Carry two SMBs in case of group separation in open water
Safety Considerations
Currents at Myoskon can be significant and can shift direction with the tidal phase. Advanced divers comfortable with current drift diving are the target audience. Never surface in open water without an SMB. Groups should stay close together as the current can separate divers rapidly. Plan dive times to coincide with appropriate tidal conditions.
Photography
The dense schooling fish make Myoskon excellent for wide-angle open-water photography. Shooting up through schools of fusiliers toward the surface, with dappled light filtering through the formations, produces striking abstract images. Pelagic encounters require fast autofocus and wide coverage. The sponge and soft coral flanks offer close-focus wide-angle macro for those willing to descend deeper.
