The Cathedral is one of Raja Ampat’s most distinctive dive sites — a cave or cavern structure in the northern part of the archipelago whose dramatic interior light effects and cathedral-like proportions create an atmospheric diving experience unlike anything else in the region.
Overview
The Cathedral earns its name from the interior light show that occurs when sunlight penetrates through natural openings in the cave structure, casting shafts and beams of light through the water column inside the cavern. At the right time of day — typically mid-morning when the sun angle is correct — these light shafts illuminate suspended particles and illuminate the cave’s interior in a way that genuinely recalls the soaring columns of light in a Gothic cathedral. The cave structure itself is substantial, with navigable passages accessible to divers with proper cavern training. Water temperature is 27–29°C.

Marine Life
The cave interior hosts species typical of low-light environments: soldierfish and squirrelfish cluster near the entrance and in crevices, large groupers rest on ledges in the dim interior, and lionfish perch motionlessly in the shadows. The cave ceiling and walls carry encrusting sponges, soft corals, and tubeworms adapted to low light. Outside the cave entrance, the adjacent reef provides the full complement of Raja Ampat’s reef biodiversity. Sea turtles are sometimes found sheltering in the cave’s entrance zone.
Dive Profile
The dive begins outside the cave and proceeds into the cavern zone following the guide. Maintain constant visual reference to the entrance (daylight) throughout — this is a cavern dive, not a full cave penetration. The main photographic and scenic zone is the interior where light shafts appear. Maximum depth inside the cavern is around 15–20 meters. After time inside, exit back through the entrance and explore the adjacent reef to 25 meters. The timing of entry determines the quality of the light show — mid-morning on clear days is optimal.
Entry and Exit
Boat access from liveaboards or operators in the northern Raja Ampat zone. Entry via back roll or giant stride; the guide leads the approach to the cave entrance at depth. Exit through the same route used for entry — always maintain visual orientation to daylight inside the cavern.

Safety Considerations
The Cathedral is rated Advanced due to the overhead environment of the cave/cavern section. Divers without cavern training should stay near the entrance and not penetrate beyond daylight visibility. Inside the cavern, buoyancy control must be precise — silt on the ceiling and floor reduces visibility dramatically if disturbed. Never exceed the cavern zone without proper cave diving certification. Carry both primary and backup torches. The remote northern location means any emergency requires significant evacuation time.

The signature shot at The Cathedral is a diver silhouetted inside the cavern with light shafts streaming through from the openings above and behind — a striking use of natural available light requiring no strobe. Shoot with a wide-angle lens (10–17mm fisheye) set to expose for the light shafts, allowing the dark interior to frame the image. The effect is most dramatic on sunny mornings; overcast conditions eliminate the shafts entirely. Bring a torch for backup illumination of subjects in the darker recesses.
