The Lagoon is a sheltered reef dive site in Raja Ampat, West Papua, Indonesia. Encircled by islands and reefs that break swell and buffer currents, the site offers calm, clear water that makes for relaxed diving in conditions that contrast with Raja Ampat’s more exposed channel sites.
Overview
The lagoon’s enclosed nature creates a distinct microhabitat. Soft corals drape the reef in brilliant oranges and purples, taking advantage of the reduced wave stress. Hard corals form dense gardens across the shallower areas, while deeper sections slope away into darker water with sea fans and barrel sponges. The sheltered setting accumulates macro life: ghost pipefish, seahorses, and mantis shrimp are all reported among the rubble and coral heads.
Schools of glassfish cluster under table corals and around reef structures, attracting predatory trevally and grouper. With no strong current to contend with, divers can spend time hovering over coral formations and inspecting every crevice. The site is popular as a second or third dive when conditions at more exposed sites have been demanding.
Visibility reaches 15–25 metres in calm periods. Water temperature ranges from 27–29°C. The sheltered environment makes current generally light.
