West Penemu

West Penemu is a reef dive site off the western face of Penemu Island in Raja Ampat, West Papua, Indonesia. Penemu Island is famous for its dramatic karst limestone formations and hidden lagoons above water, and the reef running along its western flank offers diving of matching quality beneath the surface.

Overview

The reef off Penemu’s western side benefits from currents sweeping in from the open water to the west, delivering nutrients that sustain exceptional coral vitality. The upper reef slope is dense with table corals and staghorn thickets, providing shelter for a large population of juvenile and adult reef fish. Deeper down, the slope transitions through mixed coral and sponge growth before reaching sandy channels at 20–25 metres.

Napoleon wrasse are a regular feature at this site, cruising the deeper slope with their characteristic unhurried bulk. Schools of moorish idols and bannerfish drift along the reef edge, while hawksbill turtles graze on sponges and soft coral. Wobbegong sharks occasionally rest in crevices beneath coral overhangs. The site’s relative exposure to current keeps the water clear and the reef conditions healthy.

Visibility averages 15–25 metres. Water temperatures range from 27–29°C. Currents can run moderate on the western face during tidal movement.

Dive Profile

The dive follows the reef slope from the shallower coral gardens down to 20–25 metres before ascending along the current side of the reef for a safety stop. Intermediate divers comfortable with mild to moderate current will enjoy this site. Entry and exit are by boat.
