Levanzo Wreck (SS Isola di Levanzo) is an advanced-level wreck dive at Elba Reef near the Egypt-Sudan border. This large Italian cargo ship sank in 1923 and now rests as an artificial reef at significant depth, requiring advanced wreck diving training and experience.
Overview
The SS Isola di Levanzo was an Italian cargo vessel built in 1901 by the Orlando Brothers shipyard in Livorno (Leghorn) — 339.6 feet long (approximately 103.5 metres, not the 113m previously stated here) and 3,713 tons. She ran aground on Elba Reef on 14 March 1923 while sailing from Genova to Durban carrying salt and other cargo. On 28 March 1923, during a salvage attempt, the ship broke her towing hawser, drifted onto rocks, and sank. Now resting at the edge of Elba Reef’s South Plateau, the wreck has become a thriving artificial reef. The stern and propeller sit at 22 metres, a broken section lies around 40 metres, and the wreck reaches a maximum depth of roughly 65 metres — demanding Advanced certification or equivalent and real wreck-diving experience for anything beyond the shallowest sections.

Entry and Exit
Access is by liveaboard dive boat from Elba Reef operators. Entry via giant stride or back roll in moderate sea state. Descents follow the wreck structure with guidance from the dive guide. Multiple safety stops are mandatory due to depth; ascend through the water column and maintain staged decompression. Deploy high-visibility surface marker buoy (SMB) for safety stop signaling.
