Ali Tila
Location: South Ari Atoll, Maldives Depth: 5–20 m Difficulty: Intermediate Entry: Boat
Overview
Ali Tila is a submerged thila — a classic Maldivian pinnacle formation — in South Ari Atoll. The thila rises from the atoll floor to within a few metres of the surface, creating a compact reef structure with overhangs, crevices, and ledges that support a dense community of hard and soft corals. The shallow summit makes it an ideal site for maximising bottom time and observing reef life at close quarters.
Diving
The dive typically circumnavigates the thila, exploring the upper plateau and then descending the sides to investigate overhangs and undercuts where nurse sharks rest during daylight hours. Gorgonian sea fans and barrel sponges are present on the deeper sections of the structure. The upper reef is carpeted with table corals and patch reefs that shelter juvenile reef fish.
Currents can focus around the thila, bringing in nutrients that attract schooling fish. When current is running, blue-striped snapper and fusiliers swarm the structure in dense clouds, and trevally move through the water column in pursuit.
