Banner Reef
Location: South Ari Atoll, Maldives Depth: 5–22 m Difficulty: Intermediate Entry: Boat
Overview
Banner Reef takes its name from the bannerfishes — longnose and schooling bannerfish — that gather in conspicuous numbers over this South Ari Atoll reef. The site is a curved outer reef with a broad, relatively flat top and a well-developed outer slope. Coral formations are dense, and the site is notable for being frequented by larger pelagics as well as the bannerfish aggregations for which it is named.
Diving
The dive follows the outer reef profile, descending the slope to around 20–22 m before ascending back over the reef crest and shallow plateau. Schools of bannerfishes hover above the coral heads in large numbers, creating one of the more distinctive visual spectacles on the reef. Moray eels are frequently found in the crevices along the reef slope, and blue-spotted stingrays rest on sandy patches between coral formations.
Hammerhead sharks have been recorded in the area, particularly during cooler water months when thermoclines push colder water up from depth. Grey reef sharks patrol the outer edge with regularity.

Practical Notes
Site conditions vary by tidal direction — a gentle incoming current from the open ocean side brings the best visibility and activity. Visibility typically 15–25 m. Boat access from South Ari Atoll resorts. Suitable for intermediate divers.
