Digu Kuda Giri

Location: South Malé Atoll, Maldives Depth: 5–25 m Difficulty: Intermediate Entry: Boat

Overview

Digu Kuda Giri is a wreck site in South Malé Atoll. Despite the “giri” name — typically used for small reef heads — this site features a sunken vessel that has been colonised by corals and now functions as an artificial reef. The wreck rests in shallow-to-moderate depths, making it accessible for intermediate divers while offering enough structure and depth to make the dive genuinely interesting.

Diving

The wreck has accumulated substantial coral and sponge growth over the years, with the hull softened by encrusting life. Schools of glassfish move in and out of the structure’s recesses, and lionfish hunt through these shoals with characteristic slow-motion stalking. Moray eels are well established in the wreck’s interior gaps, and scorpionfish rest on the encrusted surfaces.

The sandy seabed around the wreck holds additional life — garden eels, gobies with their commensal shrimp, and occasional blue-spotted stingrays. The shallower sections of the wreck provide a coral garden experience, with the deeper sections offering more structural wreck diving.

Marine Life

No site-specific marine life records were found for Digu Kuda Giri. The site name suggests a small reef formation (“kuda giri” = small reef head) that may include a wreck component, but no independent source confirms vessel identity, sinking history, or specific species observed here.

Practical Notes
