Embudu Finolhu Outside
Embudu Finolhu Outside is an outer reef slope dive on the southeastern edge of South Male Atoll, offering a classic Maldivian reef wall experience with good marine life density and manageable currents.
Overview
The “Outside” designation refers to the outer atoll-facing slope of Finolhu island reef, which drops from a shallow reef crest down to around 25 meters before falling away into the blue. The upper reef (5-15 meters) is characterized by hard coral gardens with diverse table and brain corals, while the deeper slope transitions to a mix of coral boulders and sandy patches. The outer face intercepts oceanic nutrient flow, which drives a higher abundance of pelagic visitors compared to the sheltered inner reef. Regular sightings include eagle rays gliding past the deeper drop-off, schools of fusiliers and snapper along the mid-slope, and turtles grazing on the reef crest. The site is frequently combined with the nearby Embudu Kandu drift dive as part of a two-dive excursion from Male or Embudu Island.

Tips for Divers
This site is well-suited as a morning dive before the stronger tidal currents build at the nearby channel. The outer slope receives the most current, while the reef crest and inner slope offer sheltered alternatives if conditions are active. Combining with Embudu Kandu is a popular two-tank programme offered by local operators.
