Embudu Kandu

Embudu Kandu is the channel passage between Embudu and Bodufinolhu islands in South Male Atoll — a current-swept kandu renowned for concentrating sharks, rays, and large pelagic species along its coral-encrusted walls.

Overview

Embudu Kandu is the calmer counterpart to the “Express” section of the channel system, allowing divers more time to explore the walls and overhangs rather than being swept through at full speed. The channel walls descend to 28 meters and are draped in sea fans, black coral trees, and encrusting sponges that thrive in the nutrient-rich current flow. Grey reef sharks and whitetip reef sharks are almost always present, patrolling the channel mouth and resting on sandy shelves along the wall. Schooling hammerhead sharks have been reported at depth during the early season. The overhangs and ledges along both walls provide shelter for resting turtles, and large grouper guard their territories among coral boulders on the channel floor. Divemasters use the channel regularly as a shark dive, positioning groups to drift along the wall while sharks cruise in the current below.

Tips for Divers

Buoyancy control is critical in this site, as the current can vary significantly between the surface and depth. Descend quickly to the wall on entry and maintain contact with the reef to control your drift. The channel is most productive for shark activity during early morning incoming tides. Always carry a surface marker buoy and be prepared for a drift exit into the lagoon or open water.
