Emmadi Giri (Manta Point)
Emmadi Giri, widely known as Manta Point, is a celebrated giri (coral head/pinnacle) in South Male Atoll and one of the Maldives’ signature manta ray cleaning stations — a site where reef mantas gather predictably to have parasites removed by resident cleaner wrasse.
Overview
The giri rises from around 30 meters to its shallowest point at 5-6 meters, and its flat top and surrounding slopes are covered in hard coral and cleaning station anemones. The site earns its “Manta Point” name from its function as a reliable aggregation spot for reef manta rays (Mobula alfredi), which circle the pinnacle in lazy spirals while cleaner wrasse work the gill rakers and skin. On good days, five to twenty mantas may be present simultaneously, creating one of the most memorable wildlife encounters in the Indian Ocean. The best manta activity coincides with the southwest monsoon (May-November), when plankton blooms in South Male Atoll and the mantas concentrate at cleaning stations throughout the atoll. Outside manta season the site still offers excellent reef diving with strong fish life attracted by the pinnacle structure and current.

Marine Life
Reef manta rays (Mobula alfredi) — reliably present May-November, occasional year-round. Grey reef sharks, eagle rays, Napoleon wrasse, giant trevally, schools of bannerfish, and cleaner wrasse at the cleaning station anemones.
Tips for Divers
Keep low on the reef and avoid rising above the mantas, as this disrupts their cleaning behaviour. The standard protocol is to kneel or crouch near the cleaning stations and let the mantas circle overhead — patience is rewarded with remarkably close approaches. Do not chase or touch the mantas. Visit during the southwest monsoon season for the highest manta concentrations. The site is best dived in the morning before afternoon chop builds.
