Fihalhohi Hausriff

Fihalhohi Hausriff is the main house reef of Fihalhohi Island Resort in South Male Atoll — the principal fringing reef used for guided and independent diving by resort guests throughout the day and night.

Overview

The main Hausriff section wraps along the primary reef face adjacent to the resort facilities, offering easy access and consistent conditions as the flagship diving experience at Fihalhohi. The reef descends through a coral terrace to around 12 meters maximum, with the upper 5 meters characterised by a particularly vibrant hard coral garden that thrives in the warm, nutrient-fed water of South Male Atoll. Resident species include habituated groups of bannerfish that hover around the mooring and entry points, large Napoleon wrasse that patrol the reef edge, and multiple species of moray eel residing in permanent crevices that dive guides know by location. Turtles visit the reef daily and are a near-certainty on any morning or afternoon dive. The Hausriff connects with both the Nord section to the north and provides access to the Paradies site further south, enabling guided excursions across the full reef system. The shallow depth and calm conditions make this site suitable for newly certified divers and snorkellers on the same reef simultaneously.

Tips for Divers

The Hausriff is the busiest section of the Fihalhohi reef system, so early morning dives offer the most undisturbed fish behaviour. Ask dive guides about the resident Napoleon wrasse locations — these large individuals have been observed at the same territories for years. The reef is ideal for night dives, with the shallowness and proximity to the resort making it a safe and accessible option for an evening dive.
