Fulhidoo Caves

Fulhidoo Caves is a cave and cavern diving site on the reef near Fulhidoo Island in the central Maldives, featuring a system of underwater caves, overhangs, and passages that house glassfish clouds, resting sharks, and an array of light-sensitive invertebrates.

Overview

The cave system at Fulhidoo is one of the more substantial underwater cave formations in the Maldives, a reef system punctuated by openings and passages that divers can explore in cavern mode (ambient light visible) and — for qualified cave divers — deeper penetration sections. The cavern mouths open on the reef wall at 8-15 meters, and the cave passages extend horizontally into the reef structure before opening into chambers with room for multiple divers. The cave ceilings and walls are colonised by bright orange and red encrusting sponges, feather stars, and tunicates that thrive in the low light environment, creating a vivid contrast with the white sandy cave floors below. Glassfish (silversides) pack the cavern interiors in dense, shimmering clouds, parting around divers in mesmerising formations. Nurse sharks and guitarfish rest undisturbed on the sandy floor of the larger chambers. The cave exits provide dramatic blue-water views that are a photographic highlight.

Tips for Divers

Maintain impeccable buoyancy throughout this dive — fin kicks that disturb the sandy cave floor will immediately destroy visibility inside the passages. Enter slowly and hover at neutrally buoyant height to avoid the silt. A torch is essential for appreciating the encrusting organisms on cave walls and ceilings. Do not penetrate beyond the ambient light zone unless you hold a cave diving certification. The glassfish clouds are most spectacular at the cavern mouths in natural light — position yourself at the cave entrance facing inward for the best silhouette and backlit images.
