Guradoo Kuda Kandu

Guradoo Kuda Kandu (“small channel” near Guradoo Island) is a gentle channel drift dive in South Male Atoll, well suited to intermediate divers seeking their first taste of Maldivian channel diving in a more forgiving current environment.

Overview

Kuda Kandu translates as “small channel” in Dhivehi, and this site lives up to its name with moderate, manageable currents compared to the major atoll passes nearby. The channel walls are carpeted with encrusting hard corals and punctuated by small overhangs hosting resting nurse sharks and lobsters. On the channel floor, patches of rubble and sand between 15 and 25 metres are favoured by garden eels and blue-spotted stingrays. The corner where the channel meets the outer reef edge is the prime spot for reef shark sightings — grey reef sharks and whitetip reef sharks cruise the current line while schools of snappers and fusiliers swirl overhead. Visibility ranges from 15 to 25 metres. Water temperature averages 27–29°C.

Tips for Divers

Enter at the channel corner on an incoming tide for the best shark encounters. The manageable current makes this a good site for practising drift technique before tackling larger channels in Male Atoll. An SMB should still be carried for the drift exit.
