Guradoo South Outside

Guradoo South Outside is the exposed outer reef face on the southern side of Guradoo Island in South Male Atoll, where ocean swells and currents bring pelagic visitors to a dramatic wall of hard coral.

Overview

Sitting on the outer edge of South Male Atoll, Guradoo South Outside faces the open Indian Ocean and receives the cleaner, more nutrient-rich water that distinguishes outer reef dives from sheltered lagoon sites. The reef face drops steeply from 3 metres at the surface to around 25 metres, where overhangs and crevices shelter soldierfish, squirrelfish, and resting whitetip reef sharks. The upper crest is particularly rich in hard coral coverage — large brain corals, massive Porites heads, and colonies of plate coral dominate the mid-depth zone. Grey reef sharks patrol the outer wall, and tuna and rainbow runners make occasional passes through the blue water. Visibility on calm days can exceed 25 metres. Water temperature averages 27–29°C.

Tips for Divers

Check current direction before entering — the exposed southern position means surge and downcurrents are possible on the outer wall. The best shark encounters are typically at the reef corner where the current deflects. Stay close to the wall to avoid being swept off the reef.
