Guraidhoo Channel

Guraidhoo Channel is one of the signature drift dives of South Male Atoll — a wide, fast-flowing passage between Guraidhoo and Kandoomaafushi where powerful tidal currents generate world-class pelagic encounters.

Overview

The channel between Guraidhoo and the surrounding reef structures funnels enormous volumes of water with each tidal cycle, creating the current that makes this site famous. Divers enter at the outer channel corner and are swept along a wall that descends to 32 metres, passing overhangs hosting large sea fans and barrel sponges. The highlight is the consistent presence of grey reef sharks and eagle rays riding the current line — it is not unusual to count a dozen or more sharks in a single drift. Hammerhead sharks visit the channel during the cooler-water season (January to March), and whale shark sightings are possible when plankton blooms occur. The exit into the protected lagoon side provides a natural end to the drift and a calmer safety stop environment. Visibility is typically 20–30 metres. Water temperature averages 27–29°C.

Tips for Divers

This dive requires confident drift skills and the ability to hold depth in strong current. Plan the dive on an incoming tide for the best shark action at the outer corner. A safety sausage (SMB) is essential for the drift exit. Brief with the skipper on pick-up protocol before entering the water.
