Guraidhoo Corner

Guraidhoo Corner is a reef dive at the turning point of Guraidhoo Island’s southern tip in South Male Atoll, where the reef geometry creates a natural aggregation spot for reef sharks and eagle rays even in lighter current conditions.

Overview

At the corner where the protected inner reef meets the more exposed outer face, the reef structure forms a natural promontory that deflects current and concentrates marine life. Divers descend along a coral-encrusted slope from 5 metres to around 25 metres, where the reef flattens before dropping into deeper water. The corner itself is the focal point — grey reef sharks habitually patrol the bend, and eagle rays frequently glide past the reef edge. The coral coverage is dense, with large brain corals and encrusting formations between 10 and 20 metres providing habitat for moray eels, lionfish, and resting hawksbill turtles. On the upper reef, anthias and damselfish hover above staghorn gardens. Compared to the full Guraidhoo Channel drift, this site sees lighter currents and is suitable for intermediate divers with good buoyancy control. Visibility averages 15–25 metres. Water temperature is 27–29°C.

Tips for Divers

Position yourself near the corner at depth and let the fish come to you — hovering quietly near the reef edge will typically draw curious reef sharks within metres. Good for wide-angle photography given the manageable currents and consistent shark presence.
