Guraidhoo Corner

Overview

Guraidhoo Corner is the standout point in the Guraidhoo channel (kandu), on the southeast side of South Malé Atoll, where a lagoon meets the open ocean. The “corner” is exactly that — the point where the reef turns and the current concentrates, and it is one of the finest shark and big-fish dives in the atoll. The reef top starts shallow, around 5 m, slopes to about 12 m, then falls away to a 40 m drop-off, with a sea-fan overhang near 20 m and a soft-coral archway around 30 m.

The dive

The classic approach is to dive the incoming current, drift to the corner, and hook in around 26–28 m to watch the show while tuna, jacks, white-tip and grey reef sharks close in. It can be dived on either tide, but the incoming flow is the one that brings the animals. A reef hook and good current skills are essential — the channel mouth can run fast on a rising tide.

Marine life

Grey reef sharks are the draw, and the numbers here are real: a long-running shark survey has recorded them at rates well into the dozens per hour at peak — one count logged as many as 69 grey reef sharks in an hour — alongside white-tip reef sharks, sometimes over twenty an hour. Add eagle rays, Napoleon wrasse, tuna, hunting jacks and trevally, and dense schools of snapper and fusilier, with green and hawksbill turtles and morays on the reef.

Conditions & who should dive it

Current runs roughly one to four knots and strengthens on the incoming tide, so this is an intermediate-to-advanced drift dive. Operators typically expect an Advanced Open Water certification, drift experience and enriched air for the depth; it is not a beginner site in strong flow. Visibility is around 25 m, clearer on the incoming current, with water at 27–31 °C.

When to go

The northeast monsoon dry season, December to April, gives the clearest water and the current that funnels life into the channel. (Mantas in this area gather at the nearby Manta Point rather than at the corner itself.)

Getting there

Guraidhoo Corner is boat access only. Guraidhoo is a local island with dive shops and guesthouses, about 30 minutes by speedboat from Malé; South Malé resorts and liveaboards also run the corner.
