Kunaavashi Kandu
Kunaavashi Kandu is a channel drift dive near Kunaavashi in South Male Atoll — a moderately paced kandu suited to intermediate divers, with good shark encounters and coral-encrusted channel walls in the 15–25 metre range.
Overview
The channel at Kunaavashi connects the open Indian Ocean with the sheltered atoll interior, funnelling tidal water across a reef-lined passage that concentrates marine life in the classic Maldivian kandu fashion. Unlike the more powerful passages near Guraidhoo and Kandoomaafushi, Kunaavashi Kandu sees manageable currents that allow intermediate divers to control their pace while still experiencing genuine drift diving. The channel walls descend to around 25 metres and are adorned with sea fans, soft corals, and encrusting formations. Grey reef sharks and whitetip reef sharks patrol the channel, particularly at the outer corner where the current first hits the reef. Eagle rays glide through on incoming tides, and schools of snapper and fusilier hold station in the current line. The inner channel narrows and the current eases as the lagoon is approached, providing a natural exit and safety stop environment. Visibility reaches 15–25 metres. Water temperature averages 27–29°C.

Tips for Divers
A good introduction to Maldivian kandu diving for those not yet comfortable with strong currents. Enter at the outer corner and let the current carry you through the channel. Carry an SMB and brief with the boat on the drift pick-up point before entering.
