Lhohi Bodu Kandu

Lhohi Bodu Kandu — “Big Channel of Lhohi” — is a powerful channel passage in South Malé Atoll that funnels ocean currents past overhanging coral walls and delivers the shark aggregations and pelagic encounters that define classic Maldivian kandu diving.

Overview

Bodu Kandu is the main, wide channel cut into the Lhohi reef system, where strong tidal currents accelerate through the gap between ocean and lagoon. On incoming tides, divers ride the surge along the channel walls, sheltering in cuts and overhangs to watch grey reef sharks and white-tip sharks cruise effortlessly against the flow. The walls descend steeply to 28 metres and beyond, decorated with sea fans and black coral bushes in the deeper sections. Eagle rays are a regular sighting, and schooling fish — fusiliers, snappers, and jacks — amass at the channel mouth where current concentrations bring maximum nutrition. The site demands confident buoyancy control and experience managing strong, unpredictable currents.

Diving Tips

  • Dive on an incoming tide for the most exciting shark action at the channel mouth.
  • Use the channel wall to shelter and maintain position when the current is strongest.
  • This is an advanced dive — confirm current conditions with your guide and have solid neutral buoyancy before attempting.
  • Keep your group together; the wide channel mouth can scatter divers quickly.
