Noomas Giri

Noomas Giri is a coral head (giri) in South Malé Atoll, a compact reef structure that rises near the lagoon floor and hosts a surprisingly dense concentration of reef life relative to its size, making it a reliable and enjoyable dive for intermediate-level divers.

Overview

Noomas Giri presents as a broad coral mound with its highest point at around 6 metres and base extending to 25 metres, surrounded by sandy lagoon floor on all sides. The structure’s isolated position means fish aggregate here as the only available shelter and feeding ground in the vicinity — creating the characteristic “giri effect” of elevated species density. Coral grouper lurk in the crevices, moray eels hunt the reef edges, and clouds of fusiliers and anthias hover above the summit. White-tip reef sharks occasionally rest in the sandy channels at the base, particularly on calmer days when current is reduced. The coral growth is a mix of hard table corals and encrusting species, with the occasional sea fan adding vertical structure on the deeper flanks.

Diving Tips

  • Descend to the base first to check the sandy perimeter for resting sharks before they sense your approach.
  • The summit is a fine spot for photos — anthias and fusiliers create a lively backdrop.
  • Moderate currents bring nutrients to the structure and improve visibility; time dives accordingly.
  • This giri pairs well with nearby South Malé Atoll sites such as Lhohi Giri for a two-dive trip.
