Ramfaru Tulu
Ramfaru Tulu is a reef point or corner site — tulu means “corner” or “point” — at the edge of the Ram Faru reef structure in South Malé Atoll, where the angular geometry of the reef creates current acceleration and concentrates marine life typical of exposed Maldivian reef corners.
Overview
Reef corners (tulu) are among the most productive dive spots in the Maldives because they funnel current and bring nutrients past a single concentrated point. Ramfaru Tulu is a prime example: the reef bends sharply here, causing current to sweep both along the outer face and around into the more sheltered lagoon side, creating a junction of habitats. On the exposed corner, grey reef sharks and eagle rays ride the current, while the transition zone supports an unusually diverse fish community mixing open-water species with shelter-seeking reef fish. The coral formation around the corner is well-developed — sea fans of substantial size mark the deeper section, and hard coral coverage is dense in the upper 10 metres.
Site Information
- Location: Maldives, Asia
- Entry Type: Boat dive
- Site Type: Reef
- Difficulty Level: Intermediate
- Maximum Depth: 25 meters
- Typical Visibility: 15-30 meters (50-100 feet)
- Current: Moderate to strong at the corner, lighter on the lagoon side
Marine Life
Grey reef sharks, eagle rays, sea fans, hard corals, parrotfish, grouper, snappers, fusiliers, moray eels, and a diverse mix of species drawn to the current-swept corner.
Diving Tips
- Position yourself at the corner point for maximum pelagic viewing — sharks and rays use the current flowing around the corner.
- If the current is strong, shelter on the lagoon side and watch the corner from a protected position.
- The deeper section (18–25 metres) at the corner base has the most impressive sea fans.
- Combine with Ram Faru for a two-site trip covering both the wall and the corner.
