Rannalhi Bodu Giri
Rannalhi Bodu Giri — “Big Coral Head of Rannalhi” — is a large giri formation in South Malé Atoll near Rannalhi Island, a substantial coral structure that supports one of the more impressive resident fish communities among the giris of this area, including reliably large sharks and schooling pelagics.
Overview
Bodu (meaning “big”) is an apt description for this giri — the coral structure is noticeably larger than many of the area’s other coral heads, providing more diverse habitat zones. The summit sits at 5–6 metres and is densely overgrown with hard corals, while the flanks present a series of overhangs and swim-throughs before reaching the sandy base at 25 metres. The site’s size supports a proportionally larger concentration of fish: multiple white-tip reef sharks may be seen resting simultaneously, schools of snapper and batfish occupy the upper flanks, and large napoleonfish regularly appear around the shallower sections. Nurse sharks are often found tucked into the deeper overhangs, and eagle rays occasionally visit the outer edges.

Diving Tips
- The size of this giri allows a full circumnavigation with plenty to see — plan a systematic circuit to cover all sides.
- Check overhangs at 18–22 metres for resting nurse sharks and smaller reef species.
- Napoleon wrasse often appear near the summit; they’re curious and photogenic.
- Combine with Rannalhi Faru for a contrasting two-dive day: giri vs. outer reef wall.
