Rannalhi Kuda Giri
Rannalhi Kuda Giri is a coral head (giri) rising from sandy shallows near Rannalhi island in South Male Atoll. The structure tops out around 8 metres and descends gradually to a sandy bottom at 20–25 metres, its flanks encrusted with hard and soft corals that provide shelter for an array of reef life.
Site Conditions
- Depth range: 8–25 m
- Typical visibility: 15–25 m
- Currents: Generally mild; stronger surges possible on exposed sides
- Best season: November–April (northeast monsoon) for calmer conditions
What to Expect
The top of the giri is carpeted with branching and plate corals alive with sergeant majors, parrotfish, and surgeonfish. The slopes host cleaning stations where Napoleon wrasse and large grouper queue patiently. Overhangs on the lower flanks shelter resting nurse sharks and lobsters, while the sandy bottom surrounding the structure attracts blue-spotted ribbontail rays and garden eels. Reef whitetip sharks are occasionally seen patrolling the deeper perimeter.
Tips for Divers
This is a relaxed, accessible dive well suited to intermediate divers building Maldives experience. The modest depth means generous bottom time for photography on the coral-rich upper sections. Currents are light compared to channel sites, making this a reliable first dive of the day or a pleasant afternoon option when stronger sites are out of condition.
