Shark Point

Shark Point is a prominent reef corner in North Male Atoll that lives up to its name, consistently delivering encounters with grey reef sharks and nurse sharks throughout the year. The site sits at the junction of a lagoon channel and the outer reef, creating a natural aggregation zone for sharks that exploit the current-driven food supply.

Site Conditions

  • Depth range: 10–28 m
  • Typical visibility: 15–25 m
  • Currents: Moderate to strong on the point; lighter on the sheltered side
  • Best season: Year-round reliable; December–April preferred for visibility

What to Expect

Grey reef sharks are the headline attraction, typically congregating in groups of 5–15 individuals near the tip of the point where tidal currents funnel nutrients. They maintain a predictable circuit around the corner, allowing divers to position down-current and observe repeated passes at close range. Nurse sharks rest in sandy pockets at the base of the reef, often stacked two or three deep. Napoleon wrasse patrol the shallower section of the point, while eagle rays regularly sweep past in the blue water off the wall. Lionfish, moray eels, and large scorpionfish add to the predator count on the reef itself.

Tips for Divers

Currents at the exposed tip can be significant during mid-tide; reef hooks are useful for maintaining position on the point without exhausting gas supply. The calmer, sheltered side of the corner offers a complete contrast — light currents and good coral cover for a gentler second half to the dive. Best dived on incoming current when the nutrient-laden water pushes the sharks into an active, feeding posture.
