Vaadho Caves
Vaadho Caves is a dramatic cave and overhang system located near Vaadho island in North Male Atoll. The site features a series of interconnected caves and swim-throughs carved into the reef wall, accessible from outside at depths of 15–24 metres, making it one of the more memorable structural dives in the atoll.
Site Conditions
- Depth range: 15–24 m
- Typical visibility: 15–25 m (variable inside caves)
- Currents: Generally mild; surge possible at cave entrances
- Best season: November–April for clearest outside water
What to Expect
The cave entrances are wide and light-filled, allowing ambient-light navigation through the larger chambers without a torch — though a light significantly enhances the experience. The walls and ceilings of the caves are studded with encrusting sponges in vivid orange and yellow, feather stars, and dense populations of glassfish that swirl around divers in narrow passages. Lionfish and large moray eels occupy the darker recesses, and nurse sharks frequently rest in the sandy-floored deeper chambers. The outer reef adjacent to the caves hosts grey reef sharks, Napoleon wrasse, and schooling fusiliers that congregate in the current.
Tips for Divers
Advanced certification is required for penetrating the deeper sections of the cave system where natural light is absent. Divers must carry a primary torch and know their air consumption carefully before entering — always maintain the rule of thirds for penetration. Buoyancy precision is paramount to avoid disturbing the silty bottom inside the caves. The outer reef at the cave entrances can be dived independently as a wall dive if the caves are outside a diver’s experience level.
