Vaageli Bodu Faru

Vaageli Bodu Faru (“Big Reef of Vaageli”) is a large reef formation in South Male Atoll’s Vaageli area, offering an expansive outer reef slope with consistent fish life and healthy coral coverage. As a bodu (big) faru, the site provides more reef to explore than the smaller formations nearby, making it a substantial dive in its own right.

Site Conditions

  • Depth range: 5–25 m
  • Typical visibility: 15–25 m
  • Currents: Light to moderate
  • Best season: November–April for northeast monsoon clarity

What to Expect

The outer slope descends through a broad band of healthy mixed coral at 10–18 metres, transitioning to a sandy terrace at depth. Hawksbill turtles are a reliable sighting, grazing on the sponge-encrusted reef slope at mid-depth. Napoleon wrasse and large bumphead parrotfish occasionally visit from the deeper outer reef. Reef whitetip sharks rest along the base of the slope, and the water column above the reef is animated with schools of fusiliers, anthias, and blue-green chromis. The broad reef top provides a very shallow secondary dive zone with interesting invertebrate life in the coral rubble.

Tips for Divers

The large footprint of the reef allows two very different dives — a deeper profile along the outer slope and a separate shallow reef top exploration. For groups with mixed experience levels, the gentler upper section is accessible to beginners while more experienced divers can explore the deeper reef. Tidal timing is flexible here compared to the channel sites in the Vaageli cluster.
