Vaageli Faru Nord

Vaageli Faru Nord (“North Reef of Vaageli”) is the northern section of the Vaageli reef system in South Male Atoll. The outer reef slope here is characterised by robust hard coral coverage and a productive ecosystem that benefits from the nutrient-rich currents running along the north-facing reef wall.

Site Conditions

  • Depth range: 5–25 m
  • Typical visibility: 15–25 m
  • Currents: Light to moderate; directional flow along the wall
  • Best season: November–April for northeast monsoon clarity

What to Expect

The northern exposure of the Vaageli reef receives consistent water movement that keeps the corals in excellent condition. Hard coral formations dominate the upper 15 metres, with fields of staghorn and table Acropora providing habitat for a dense fish community. The mid-depth slope transitions to a more vertical wall section with sea fans and encrusting growth. Grey reef sharks cruise the outer limit of visibility, while turtles — particularly hawksbill — are exceptionally common on this section of the reef. Blue-spotted stingrays rest in sandy pockets at depth, and Napoleon wrasse are a fixture of the mid-water.

Tips for Divers

This site works well as a drift dive when the current runs along the north face, allowing divers to cover a large section of the reef in a single dive. The shallow reef top makes for an excellent extended safety stop, with good snorkelling quality and visibility. Combine with Vaageli Corner and Vaageli Faru Süd for a comprehensive exploration of the full Vaageli reef system.
