Vaageli Faru Süd
Vaageli Faru Süd is a reef dive site in the Vaageli Channel area of the Maldives, in Kaafu (North Malé) Atoll. The site lies within the channel system associated with the Vaageli thila, a submerged pinnacle structure with terraced reef formations that supports a broad range of Maldivian reef species.
Overview
The Vaageli Channel system contains several dive structures, and the southern reef (Süd/south) presents a fringing reef with overhangs and terrace formations descending to a sandy bottom at around 20–25 metres. The channel’s current flow brings nutrients that sustain healthy soft and hard coral growth, and the overhangs between 10–20 metres are colonised by black corals and soft corals. The site is suitable for divers from beginner to advanced level.
Marine Life
Whitetip reef sharks patrol the channel and reef edge. Eagle rays are regularly sighted, and octopus inhabit crevices in the reef structure. Lionfish lurk in overhangs alongside vibrant flatworms and cleaning stations. Napoleon wrasse (humphead wrasse) and groupers are recorded in the channel. Schools of reef fish, colourful nudibranchs, and cleaning shrimp complete the macro picture. The overhangs between 10–20 metres are the most productive areas for diverse invertebrate life.
Dive Profile
The top of the reef structure begins at approximately 10 metres, with terraces descending to the sandy bottom at 20–28 metres. Visibility in the channel can reach 18 metres or more. Current flows vary with tides and drive the quality of marine life encounters — incoming currents typically produce the most active feeding behaviour. Maximum depth on this dive is approximately 25 metres.
