Velassaru Caves

Velassaru Caves is a cave and overhang dive site located near Velassaru island in North Male Atoll, offering a shallower cave system than some of the more notorious deep cave sites in the Maldives. The site’s modest maximum depth of 20 metres makes the cavern zone accessible to advanced open-water divers and provides an exceptional photographic experience.

Site Conditions

  • Depth range: 5–20 m
  • Typical visibility: 15–25 m outside; variable inside
  • Currents: Generally mild; periodic surge at cave entrances
  • Best season: November–April for optimal outside conditions

What to Expect

The cave system features multiple chamber entrances that allow divers to enter the reef structure, navigate through areas of filtered and ambient light, and exit on a different section of the reef face. The cave walls and ceilings are encrusted with colourful sponges, cup corals, and feather stars that require artificial light to fully appreciate. Large glassfish schools fill the entrance chambers, creating dramatic backlighting effects. Nurse sharks and large moray eels are resident within the caves, and the outer reef wall immediately beyond the entrances hosts grey reef sharks, Napoleon wrasse, and hawksbill turtles. The shallow maximum depth of the cavern section makes gas management very comfortable.

Tips for Divers

Despite the shallow maximum depth, a torch is essential for appreciating the full colour range of the cave biology, much of which is hidden in shadow. Divers should move through caves in single file to minimise silt disturbance and ensure the group can navigate back through the same passage if needed. The site’s proximity to Vaadho Caves makes it an ideal pairing for a morning of cave diving in North Male Atoll.
