Overview

Ngerechong Drop-off is a wall dive on the southern side of Ngerechong Island in the less-trafficked southern Rock Islands, approximately 45 minutes by boat from Koror. The wall drops from a shallow coral-topped reef at 3–5 meters to well beyond recreational depth limits. The site receives lower diver traffic than Palau’s famous Ngemelis walls, and is typically dived in combination with the nearby Ngerechong North Coral Garden.

Marine Life

The wall hosts gorgonian sea fans and soft corals typical of southern Palau walls. Grey reef sharks and whitetip reef sharks patrol the wall edge — standard for Palau reef walls. Hawksbill turtles are common in the broader southern Rock Islands area. Napoleon wrasse make regular appearances. Specific marine life species beyond these general categories have not been confirmed by three independent sources specifically at Ngerechong Drop-off. The lower diver traffic generally means less disturbed marine behaviour.

Dive Profile

Descend from the reef top and drop over the wall edge at around 5 meters. Explore the wall face between 10–33 meters where coral growth is most developed. Depth control requires attention — the wall is steep to vertical. Swim along the wall at a comfortable depth, checking overhangs and crevices for marine life. Ascend to the reef top for a safety stop. Total dive time is typically 50–60 minutes with good air management.

Entry and Exit

Boat dive from Koror (approximately 45 minutes). Entry by giant stride with descent to the reef top. Depending on conditions, this is either a drift dive with SMB pickup or a return-to-boat profile. The southern location generally provides sheltered conditions.

Safety Considerations

Standard wall diving precautions apply. The wall drops to extreme depth — monitor your depth gauge or computer continuously. The southern location means longer boat travel time in case of emergency — plan conservatively.

Photography

Wide-angle recommended for capturing the wall topography and sea fan gardens. The lower diver traffic allows more time to compose shots. The reef top is excellent for close-focus wide-angle coral photography in natural light.
