Overview
Temple of Doom is a cave system accessed from the north end of the Blue Holes cavern at Ngemelis Island. From inside Blue Holes, a narrow entrance at approximately 25–27 meters (80–85 feet) depth leads into this separate, more complex cave. Fish N Fins, one of Palau’s most established dive operators, explicitly notes that the site has been associated with multiple fatalities and should be entered only by divers holding a full cave diving certification with appropriate specialist equipment. This is not a casual extension of the Blue Holes cavern dive.
The chambers contain geological formations similar to Chandelier Cave, with stalactites and stalagmites from the last Ice Age. Light effects filter through cracks and openings, creating atmospheric scenes in the upper chambers. The maximum depth in the accessible portions reaches approximately 30 meters, though the cave extends deeper in its more complex sections.

Marine Life
The cave’s darker zones shelter low-light species. Soldierfish and squirrelfish school in the shadowed passages. Large lobsters and slipper lobsters occupy crevices. Sponges and encrusting organisms cover cave walls in areas receiving some light. The biological interest here is secondary to the geological formations and the technical diving experience. Note: species claims beyond these general categories have not been confirmed by three independent sources specifically for Temple of Doom and have been omitted.
Dive Profile
This dive is conducted via Blue Holes — divers must first complete the cavern portion to reach the Temple of Doom entrance. The entrance is at approximately 25–27 meters in the north section of Blue Holes cavern. The cave extends deeper and further into the reef from this point. Navigation is complex, with multiple passages branching off. A guideline must be deployed. Air management follows the rule of thirds at minimum, with additional reserve for the overhead portion added to whatever gas was used reaching the entrance through Blue Holes. This means arriving at the cave entrance with significant gas reserve — plan accordingly.
Entry and Exit
Boat dive from Koror (50–70 minutes) or from liveaboards. Access is exclusively through Blue Holes — there is no surface entry to Temple of Doom. Exit must be made back through Blue Holes.
Tips and Recommendations
- Only attempt with full cave certification and a local guide thoroughly familiar with the cave layout
- Carry a primary torch, minimum two backups — no natural light in the deeper sections
- Deploy a guideline from the Blue Holes entrance
- Plan gas management for the combined Blue Holes approach plus Temple of Doom exploration — rule of thirds applied from the Blue Holes entry, not from the cave entrance
- Divers without cave certification should not enter; treat this as a hard limit
Safety Considerations
Temple of Doom has been explicitly associated with multiple fatalities by Fish N Fins Palau, one of Palau’s most established and long-running dive operators. The combination of depth (up to 30m), complex navigation, overhead environment, silt disturbance risk, and significant distance from the only exit creates genuine life-safety risk for unprepared divers. Full cave certification is the minimum qualification. Never enter without a deployed guideline, redundant lights, and gas reserves calculated from the surface entry point. Narcosis at 30m in a confined space is a serious additional risk factor. This site should be treated with the same respect as any serious cave dive regardless of the relatively modest maximum depth.
Photography
Cave photography in overhead environments requires a streamlined rig and excellent buoyancy. Wide-angle captures chamber scale and stalactite formations. Off-camera lighting from a buddy’s torch creates dramatic rim light. Shoot toward any available natural light sources for ethereal beam effects. Keep your kit simple — this is not the place for large tray-and-arm setups that can snag or disturb silt.
