Cathedral Beqa
A natural swim-through cavern where shafts of sunlight filter through gorgonian-fringed roof openings — the architectural heart of the Beqa Lagoon reef system.
Overview
Cathedral Beqa takes its name from the dramatic swim-through cavern at its center: a large coral archway and tunnel on the Beqa Lagoon reef where sunlight penetrates through irregular roof openings lined with gorgonians and soft corals, creating filtered light beams that illuminate the interior walls. The effect is most pronounced on morning dives when the sun angle produces defined beams rather than flat ambient light. Sources including a Fiji travel site and the Diveplanit database describe the site as a swim-through cavern at 15–20 meters with batfish and lush soft coral inside. The site type has been updated to “cave” to reflect the primary structural feature; divers pass through a genuine cavern structure rather than simply diving the outer reef. Grey reef sharks patrol the reef face outside the cavern.

Marine Life
Inside the Cathedral swim-through, soft corals and sea fans benefit from reduced UV exposure, supporting a vivid display on the interior walls. Batfish are documented inside the cavern by operator accounts. Lionfish and moray eels inhabit cavern crevices. Outside on the reef face, grey reef sharks patrol the drop-off at 15–20 meters. Whitetip reef sharks rest on sand patches. Turtles are noted on the outer reef. Schools of surgeonfish and fusiliers flow past the reef face. Specific species counts and densities are not documented in detail by available sources for this site beyond the genera noted.
Dive Profile
Begin outside on the reef face to observe the shark patrol early in the dive while gas and attention are highest. Descend to 18–20 meters, observe the outer reef, then ascend to the cavern entry point. Enter the swim-through from the deeper opening at approximately 15 meters and navigate through to the shallower exit at 8–10 meters, pausing inside to observe the light beams and soft coral walls. Complete the dive on the upper reef in 5–8 meters. Morning light beams are optimal — schedule Cathedral as a morning dive.
Entry and Exit
Accessed by boat from Pacific Harbour operators, typically as the second dive in a Beqa Lagoon package following Shark Reef Marine Reserve. Entry by giant stride; lagoon conditions are usually calm.
Tips and Recommendations
- Dive it in the morning: The light beam effect is angle-dependent. Midday and afternoon dives produce flatter light inside the cavern.
- Maintain horizontal trim in the swim-through: The cavern is navigable with good trim, but a vertical position will disturb sediment from the floor and reduce visibility for divers behind you.
- Carry a small torch: The interior is dark enough to benefit from a dive light, revealing soft coral colors and crevice life.
- Combine with Coral Gardens: These two sites offer contrasting character on the same lagoon system — Cathedral for drama, Coral Gardens for relaxed exploration.
Safety Considerations
The swim-through is well-ventilated — this is not a penetration dive and does not require cave or cavern training. Divers with claustrophobia should confirm the route with the guide before entering. Monitor depth through the cavern as the floor slopes. Grey reef sharks outside are habituated to divers and are not aggressive in the absence of feeding stimuli.
Photography
The Cathedral presents two different photographic opportunities in a single dive. Inside the swim-through, the light beam effect rewards wide-angle or fisheye timing to the morning angle — position yourself in the dark interior and shoot toward the gorgonian-framed openings with a diver silhouetted against the light. Outside, the grey reef shark patrol offers clean wide-angle shark portraits against the open water.
